Tbilisi-Chiatura-Mgvimevi Monastery-Katskhi-Ubisa Monastery-Tbilisi
Get ready for an exciting journey today as we set out to explore the hidden gems of Georgia. Our first stop is the charming town of Chiatura, home to the largest manganese reserve in the country. With mining operations dating back to 1879, the town’s industrial history is evident in its architecture and atmosphere, which still exudes a Soviet-era charm. Next up, we’ll visit the magnificent Mgvimevi Monastery, which boasts a unique blend of rock-carved architecture and stunning frescoes. The 13th-century two-nave basilica dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God is the main highlight of this complex. Our adventure continues as we make our way to the iconic Katskhi pillar, a natural limestone monolith towering above the landscape. Though we won’t be able to visit the monastery perched atop the pillar, we’ll have a chance to stop and capture some unforgettable photos of this breathtaking sight. As we head back towards Tbilisi, we’ll make one final stop at the historic Ubisa Monastery, home to a fascinating collection of structures dating back to the 9th century. From the St. George’s Monastery to the 4-floor tower from AD 1141 and fragments of a 12th-century defensive wall, there’s no shortage of history to explore. And for art lovers, the monastery’s stunning cycle of murals from the late 14th century by the legendary Georgian painter Damiane is a true feast for the eyes. So buckle up, and get ready for a day of adventure, history, and unforgettable sights as we explore the hidden treasures of Georgia!
